Toyohashi faces the Pacific Ocean in the south, Mikawa Bay in the west, and the Yumihari Mountains in the east. In the west of the city lies Mikawa Port, this is famous as it exports and imports the largest number of automobiles in Japan. Mikawa Port became a shipping port for automobiles in 1979, when Toyota Motor Corp. opened its Tahara Plant. Mitsubishi and Suzuki, as well as Toyota, then started exporting their products from this port. In 1988 Mikawa Port began importing Peugeot automobiles. These imports were subsequently extended to encompass products made by Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Rover and Volkswagen. As a result, this port has an international base for the shipping of automobiles. |
