With the longest living coral reef in the western hemisphere, the Keys are a diver's paradise. The most popular dive spot off Key West is Sand Key, where you can see rock fingers, gullies with fire, elkhorn and staghorn coral, rays, sea turtles and more than 600 varieties of colorful fish. This barren island is suitable for both divers and snorkelers. At nearby Western Dry Rocks, divers will love seeing the Aquanaut, a tug sunk in 75 feet of water.
Located about 70 miles west of Key West and accessible only by plane or boat, the Dry Tortugas are both a natural and historical wonder. The area is also famous for being a protected bird sanctuary and nesting grounds for sooty and noddy terns. Divers, snorkelers and nature lovers will enjoy the area for its unique coral, French angel fish, loggerhead sea turtles and many birds.
If you want to see the reef without getting wet, take a Glassbottom Boat Tour. These spacious vessels float above the coral reef, allowing you a close-up look at this beautiful ecosystem, while you comfortably enjoy the view. Relax and watch as schools or tropical fish languidly swim by, followed by turtles, stingrays and dolphins in a living, breathing landscape of stunning coral formations and undulating sea fans.
Schools of wild dolphins inhabit the waters surrounding Key West and there are several boats willing to take you out in search of these mythical creatures in their natural habitat. As your eyes scan the cobalt seas, dolphins break the calm veneer, gracefully arching out of the water just to dive back in and streak by in the crystal clear depths.
Besides these tours, you can rent a canoe or kayak and explore our sparkling coastline yourself. Before you go, stop by the Aquarium or sign up for a family program to educate yourself about our unique environment.
Sunset Celebration in Key West
Nowhere on the planet is the setting of the sun honored with such festivities as in Key West. Every evening, crowds gather on the docks of Mallory Square to watch the sun dip below the horizon. Nature provides a nightly ritual full of tropical color, beauty and splendor. The event is further enhanced by the Cultural Preservation Society, comprised of local artisans, vendors, jugglers, clowns and even a cookie lady, who set up their booths and stake out their space on the dock to provide immeasurable entertainment , food, Key West crafts and even bagpipe music! This is another of the ''not to be missed'' attractions of Key West. |
